Exploring Tricky & Maxinquaye: The 90s Bowie?
Tricky—ex–Massive Attack maestro with a gravelly, medicated rasp—took Bristol hip-hop into dark, soul-soaked, dub-inflected territory on his 1995 debut Maxinquaye. Teaming up with Martina Topley-Bird, he fused trauma, addiction and raw melancholy into a genre-bending sound so bold it earned Bowie comparisons, only to be later tidied up for radio.
This New British Canon doc walks us from Tricky’s early Bristol days through the making and release of Maxinquaye, then into the aftermath of fame. Between deep dives on his creative partnership with Martina and a slew of interviews and classic press clippings, you get the full rollercoaster of Tricky’s trip-hop revolution.
