The Doobie Brothers brought their trademark harmonies and decades of hits to NPR’s Tiny Desk, kicking off with “Takin’ It to the Streets” before teasing that the office vibe might even top their Jones Beach show. 50 years into a storied career (including Rock & Roll and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductions), Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, Patrick Simmons and John McFee reunited this year to release Walk This Road, and stopped by to debut the new track “Angels & Mercy” alongside crowd-favorites “Black Water” and “Listen to the Music.”
Backing the core quartet were John Cowan on bass, Marc Russo on sax, Marc Quiñones on congas, and Ed Toth on drums, with Bobby Carter producing and a full Tiny Desk crew capturing every riff. The result was a high-energy, back-to-basics performance that felt just as fresh as it did nostalgic.
