The Doobie Brothers bring Timeless Hits to Tiny Desk

The Doobie Brothers kicked off their NPR Tiny Desk set with “Takin’ It to the Streets,” and Tom Johnston couldn’t help but marvel that the cozy office vibe outshone their Jones Beach gig. This reunited lineup—Johnston, Michael McDonald, Patrick Simmons and John McFee—dusted off classics like “Black Water” and “Listen to the Music,” then dropped a fresh track, “Angels & Mercy,” straight off their new album, Walk This Road.

With a stellar backing band (including John Cowan on bass, Marc Russo on sax, Marc Quiñones on percussion and Ed Toth on drums), the group’s effortless chemistry and 50 years of rock-and-roll savvy turned NPR’s headquarters into a full-blown party.
