NPR Music: Oklou: Tiny Desk Concert

Oklou’s Tiny Desk Concert kicked off when Paris-based producer-vocalist Marylou Mayniel flew into NYC with her five-month-old in tow to reimagine four tracks from her debut album, Choke Enough. Teaming up with an eight-piece choir, she stripped away the synths and autotune in favor of piano, acoustic guitar, a seven-foot marimba—and even bubble-wrap crackles for a DIY fire effect—to build lush, acoustic-folk soundscapes.

With arranger Casey MQ doubling on keys, guitar and backing vocals, the set wove through slowed-down versions of “blade bird” and “ict,” a bare-bones recorder-led “harvest sky,” plus a first live taste of the unreleased “what’s good.” The result? A refreshingly intimate spin on Oklou’s trademark sonic adventurousness.
