Kokoroko’s Tiny Desk Turn-Up
Kokoroko’s bandleader Onome Edgeworth admits she thought the show would “go horribly wrong,” but their blend of funk, jazz, afrobeats and R&B had the NPR crowd vibing from the first note. Backed by Sheila Maurice-Grey’s trumpet, Noushy Nanguy’s trombone and a tight rhythm section, they breezed through highlights like “Together We Are” and “Idea 5 (Call My Name),” proving why their latest album, Tuff Times Never Last, is all about choosing joy, even when times are tough.
With a set list that also features “Never Lost” and “Sweetie,” Kokoroko flexed newfound confidence in both individual and harmonic vocals, taking a massive leap musically. Producer Bobby Carter and the Tiny Desk team captured every moment, turning what started as pre-show jitters into a feel-good performance you didn’t know you needed.
