David Byrne, known for packing stadiums with choreographed mayhem, shrunk his sprawling cast into NPR’s Tiny Desk—twelve performers in brilliant blue suits, wielding custom, cable-free instruments (from marimbas to Brazilian timbaus) to bring his new album Who Is The Sky? to life. They jammed four tracks in tight quarters: the euphoric Everybody Laughs, the bouncy Don’t Be Like That, and Talking Heads throwbacks (Nothing But) Flowers and Life During Wartime.
This bucket-list Tiny Desk set wrapped up with Byrne pedaling off on a rented bike, cruising through a crisp fall afternoon in D.C.—proof that big ideas can fit in the smallest of spaces.
