NPR Music: David Byrne: Tiny Desk Concert

David Byrne turned NPR’s tiny 10×11-foot studio into a mini procession, packing in over a dozen musicians wielding everything from marimbas and timbaus to cello and saxophone—all dressed in matching bright blue suits and sporting custom, cable-free gear. They rolled through four tunes: the euphoric “Everybody Laughs” and “Don’t Be Like That” from his new album Who Is The Sky?, plus Talking Heads classics “(Nothing But) Flowers” and a show-stopping “Life During Wartime.”

It was a bucket-list Tiny Desk moment—no amps, no fuss, just Byrne’s sprawling sound fitting perfectly into a cozy corner. After the set, Byrne didn’t hang around for the limos—he hopped on a rented bike and pedaled off into a beautiful fall afternoon in D.C.
