I'm learning Phrygian and the Locrian mode. I'm wondering how to get better in phrasing?

The cool thing about the Phrygian scale is you can play a pentatonic scale and then throw in the "phrygian note" (minor second) at the "right" times. Locrian is tricky because of the diminished 5th, but a great way to practice it is with the jazz standard 'Autumn Leaves.' You play F# Locrian over the F#m7b5 chord. For the rest, you can play a G Major scale but for some added practice you'd play a E Harmonic Minor or B Phrygian Dominant only over the B7 chord (so a D# instead of a D). In terms of phrasing within modes, I always try to be mindful of making sure I don't 'slip' into playing the key signature scale itself, even if it feels or sounds correct sometimes. So, making sure whatever I'm playing resolves on the appropriate note for the mode or chord.
